Smart Home and Security

Smart home devices are sold on features and bought on convenience. They are lived with through three things the box rarely mentions: the subscription that unlocks the features in the advertising, the battery that dies at an inconvenient moment, and the ecosystem that decides which other devices will ever talk to them.

The analyses here start there. What a doorbell or camera still does without a paid plan. How a smart lock behaves when its batteries run flat and whether there is a mechanical way in. Whether the Wi-Fi at the far end of the house can carry a video stream at all. And which labels promise compatibility that turns out to depend on a hub you do not own.

Where a device controls power or a door, we treat the load rating and the fallback as safety questions, not specifications.
