Tools and DIY

Tools are one of the few consumer categories where the price ladder maps onto something real. A trade-grade drill is not better because of branding; it is better because the motor is rated for a duty cycle that a consumer model is not, and because the bearings and switch are specified to survive it.

The catch is that most buyers do not need that duty cycle, and pay for it anyway. These analyses work out where the line falls for a given job — which purchases genuinely justify the trade tier, and which are a consumer model plus better consumables.

Battery platform lock-in gets its own treatment throughout, because in cordless tools the battery system is the real purchase and the tool is almost incidental.
