A curtain can be made of genuinely light-blocking fabric and still leave a room bright at dawn. The light is not coming through it. It is coming around it.

People replace curtains with more expensive blackout fabric and keep the same gaps, so the room stays just as bright.
Through versus around
Two labels are often confused. Blackout fabric has a dense weave or a coating and blocks nearly all transmitted light. Room-darkening fabric reduces light noticeably but lets a glow through.
Once the fabric blocks transmission, the remaining light takes the paths of least resistance: the gap above the rail, the gaps where the curtain meets the wall at each side, the gap in the middle where panels meet, and the gap at the floor or sill.
- Above the rail: light spills upward and onto the ceiling, lighting the room.
- Sides: curtains that stop at the window frame leave bright strips.
- Center: panels that only meet rather than overlap open during the night.
- Bottom: short curtains leave a band of light across the floor.
Stand in the dark room at dawn and look where the light is. It will be edges and the top, and those are where the fix goes.
Closing the gaps
A few installation choices make more difference than upgrading the fabric.
- Mount the rail higher and wider — well above the frame and well beyond it on each side.
- Use a wraparound or return rail that bends the curtain back to the wall at the sides.
- Add a pelmet or valance to stop light spilling over the top.
- Overlap the panels in the middle, using magnets or an overlap arm.
- Floor length rather than sill length.
Blinds, curtains, and the combination
A roller blind fitted inside the window recess, combined with curtains outside it, gives two layers and staggered gaps — the closest a normal bedroom gets to full darkness. In a child’s room, choose a cordless blind: the Window Covering Safety Council and the CPSC warn that looped and dangling cords are a strangulation hazard for young children.
Blackout blinds with side channels seal the edges almost completely, at a higher cost. For renters, temporary suction or adhesive blackout blinds work well without drilling.
A sleep mask is the inexpensive alternative that sidesteps the room entirely, and it travels.
