Fixed-line heads are the unglamorous answer. There is no spool, no spring and no winding, and a replacement line takes about ten seconds.

Nylon line on a spool is under tension and rubbing against adjacent turns. Friction generates heat, and nylon softens well below the temperature the head reaches on a hot day. Adjacent turns fuse, and the bump mechanism then cannot pull line out however hard you tap.

Two things reduce it. Winding the line neatly and not too tightly, in even layers rather than crossing over itself. And soaking spare line in water for a day before use — nylon absorbs a little moisture, which keeps it supple and less prone to both welding and snapping.

Store spools of line in a sealed container with a damp cloth. Line that has sat in a dry garage for two years is brittle and will break constantly.

Line shape and diameter

Line is sold round, square, twisted and star-shaped. The non-round profiles have edges and cut noticeably better in thick growth; they also wear faster.

  • Round is most durable and least aggressive — fine for grass edges.
  • Square or star cuts woody weeds far better.
  • Diameter must match the head. Too thick and it will not feed; too thin and it snaps constantly.
  • Check the manual for the maximum, and use the thickest the head accepts for heavy work.
  • Remove the battery or disconnect the spark plug wire before opening or reloading the head, and wear eye protection when trimming.
