Three technologies, three compromises

Every LCD monitor uses one of three liquid crystal arrangements. They differ in how the crystals twist, and that single difference cascades into everything you see.

If two people ever look at the screen at once, or you sit off to one side, buy IPS or OLED. The off-axis color shift on VA and TN is the difference you will notice within minutes.
What resolution actually needs
Resolution only means something alongside physical size, because what your eye resolves is pixel density. 1080p is comfortable at 22 inches and visibly coarse at 27.
The practical pairings: 1080p up to 24 inches, 1440p at 27, and 4K at 32 or above. Going bigger without going higher does not give you more screen — it gives you the same screen, magnified.
- 27 inch, 1440p is the sweet spot for most desks and the most competitive segment.
- 4K at 27 inches needs display scaling, which is well handled on macOS and inconsistent on Windows.
- Ultrawide replaces two monitors for some people and creates an awkward neck angle for others. Try before committing.
OLED closed the gap, at a price
By 2026, OLED desktop monitors — QD-OLED and WOLED panels, the same self-emissive family used in high-end TVs — are a mainstream third option alongside LCD’s IPS and VA. Each pixel produces and switches off its own light, which is why OLED blacks are truly black and pixel response is faster than any LCD panel, TN included.
The trade-off is burn-in: a static element left on screen for long stretches — a taskbar, a scoreboard, a news ticker — can leave a faint permanent shadow. Manufacturers have cut the risk with pixel-shifting and screen savers, and most now back their OLED monitors with a burn-in warranty of two to four years. Check that number before buying one for a desk that mostly shows static apps.
Mini-LED is a separate upgrade path worth knowing about: it is still an LCD backlight, not a self-emissive panel, but splitting that backlight into hundreds of independently dimmed zones gets a VA or IPS monitor much closer to OLED contrast without the burn-in risk. It shows up mainly on premium VA panels, and it is not a fourth panel type so much as a better light behind the same three.
Where refresh rate actually matters
The jump from 60 Hz to 120 or 144 Hz is real and immediately visible — not only in games, but in cursor movement and scrolling. Beyond about 144 Hz the returns fall away sharply for anyone not playing competitively.
The catch is that your computer has to produce those frames. A 240 Hz monitor fed 70 frames per second is a 70 Hz monitor with a more expensive sticker.

27-inch 1440p IPS Monitor

Is 1080p enough for a 27-inch monitor?
