PSI Sells Pressure Washers. GPM Is What Cleans.

PSI breaks dirt loose and GPM carries it away. Cleaning units multiply the two, and most buyers optimize only the first.

Part of the guide: Tools and DIY Buying Mistakes: What Fails and How to Check Before You Buy

Pressure washers are advertised on PSI, and PSI is genuinely half the story. A high-pressure jet breaks the adhesion between dirt and the surface underneath.

Breaking it loose is not the same as removing it. That takes water volume, measured in gallons per minute, and it is the specification manufacturers print smallest.

One number advertised, two numbers needed

Nothing fails. The machine simply takes far longer than expected, and the reason is never obvious from the box.

Cleaning units, not pressure

The industry shorthand is cleaning units: PSI multiplied by GPM. It is crude and it predicts real-world speed far better than pressure alone.

MachinePSIGPMCleaning units
Budget electric1,8001.22,160
Good electric2,0001.63,200
Entry gas2,8002.46,720
Prosumer gas3,2002.88,960

Two machines can quote similar PSI and differ by a factor of two in how long a driveway takes. The difference is in the flow figure nobody reads.

The nozzle matters more than the machine

Nozzles are color-coded to a standard, and the color describes the fan angle. Narrower means more force concentrated on less area.

  • Red, 0°. A pencil jet. It will strip paint, carve wood and cut stucco, and it can cut skin. There is almost no home job that needs it. Never point any nozzle at people or pets, and get emergency care for any injection injury, however small it looks.
  • Yellow, 15°. Heavy stripping on concrete and stone.
  • Green, 25°. The general-purpose choice for most surfaces.
  • White, 40°. Gentle rinsing — cars, windows, painted surfaces.
  • Black, soap. Low pressure, which is what lets the detergent siphon work at all.

Electric or gas, and the water supply limit

Electric machines are quieter, start instantly, need no servicing and are limited by the household circuit. They suit patios, cars, outdoor furniture and bikes.

Gas machines deliver far more flow and are the right answer for large driveways and repeated heavy work. Run them only outdoors, away from doors, windows and vents: the engine produces carbon monoxide, and CDC and CPSC have linked gas-powered equipment used in garages and other enclosed spaces to fatal poisonings. They also need fuel stabilizer over winter and a pump that has been drained or protected against freezing.

One constraint applies to both: a pressure washer cannot use more water than your tap supplies. A machine rated at 2.8 GPM fed by a tap delivering 2 GPM will starve its pump, which is the commonest cause of premature pump failure. Time a bucket fill before buying anything large.

Rotary Surface Cleaner Attachment

The attachment that changes the job more than any upgrade to the machine. A patio that took two hours takes under one.

  • Two spinning jets under a shroud
  • Even coverage with no zebra striping
  • Contains the spray
  • Needs adequate flow to spin well
  • Awkward on steps and edges

Electric Pressure Washer (2000 PSI, 1.6 GPM)

at Amazon

Compare the GPM across models at the same price. That figure, not PSI, is where machines genuinely differ.

  • Quiet enough for a suburban garden
  • No fuel, no servicing
  • Enough for patios, cars and furniture
  • Limited flow compared with gas
  • Tethered to a socket

Questions people actually ask

Is GPM or PSI more important on a pressure washer?

Both, multiplied. PSI breaks dirt loose and GPM carries it away. Cleaning units — PSI × GPM — predicts real cleaning speed far better than pressure alone.

What do pressure washer nozzle colors mean?

The fan angle: red 0°, yellow 15°, green 25°, white 40°, black for soap. Green handles most jobs; red is narrow enough to damage most surfaces and can cut skin.

Do I need a gas pressure washer?

Only for large driveways or frequent heavy work. Electric machines are quieter, need no servicing and are ample for patios, cars and furniture. Run any gas machine outdoors only — the engine exhaust is a carbon-monoxide hazard indoors.

Can a pressure washer be too powerful for my faucet?

Yes. It cannot use more water than the supply delivers, and starving the pump is a common cause of early failure. Time a bucket fill to check your flow first.
